I have been saving these two big artworks for a while, not really knowing when to release them. I reached 6000 followers on Instagram yesterday and I figured now would be the perfect time...
Thalassa and Meraki are the same dimensions as my first two big pieces I created years ago in Lombok. It would have been more logical to experiment on smaller panels to start off with back then because resin is like 'liquid gold' and takes a long time to understand. But for me it was all or nothing, so I threw myself in at the deep end and created two beasts... Thalassa and Meraki were the first two big paintings I created in my new studio here in Newquay. I had been craving a bigger space for a long time, because my other studios didn't allow me to work on bigger paintings. As soon as I found my current one, I made these.
'Thalassa' means 'spirit of the sea' in Greek. To me, this painting captures everything I admire about the ocean - the depth, the light, the darkness, the calm and turbulence. The glittering sunlight reflecting onto the surface and coral reef shining through breaking waves. 'Meraki' is a word that modern Greeks use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love - when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever that may be. This painting was a challenge I set for myself - using as little blue and green as possible, but still embodying the essence of the ocean's movement and textures. I give a piece of myself into every painting, but this one definitely has an extra dose of my love. Both of these are now available. Scroll down to see full images and close ups of both artworks.
